Boss Management from the Mahabharata

Home Blog Boss Management from the Mahabharata

Are you one the guys who is unable to understand why some people find favor with the bosses, while you don’t? Does it irritate you no-end when you work hard and smart, and yet you are not in your boss's favorite books? Are you at wits-end to understand what else to do for that promotion? That bonus? That corner office? That favorite seat next to the boss? I draw upon Mahabharata for some priceless lessons in “Boss-Management”.

The glorious Pandavas, the good guys, have lost it all to the evil Kauravas (their cousins) in a series of game of dice. The final one - win all back or else get banished for twelve long years to a forest and spend one more year in total incognito – is also lost. They are banished to the forest, have successfully spent the twelve long years in wilderness, possibly beating Bear Grylls to shame in survival techniques. Pandavas decide to spend the 13th year incognito in the palace of King Virata. The eldest of the five Pandavas – Yudhistira, the righteous one – is planning to be a counsel of the King; Bhima- the terrible – has decided to the chief cook; Arjuna – archer supreme – has decided to be a dance teacher to the princess; Nakula and Sahadeva – the noble ones – have decided to be the keepers of stable and the cow-shed at the King Virata’s palace. They have little idea on how to be play these roles in the King’s presence.

Sage Dhaumya understands the erstwhile emperor’s and his brother’s predicament. He proceeds on a discourse on how to conduct oneself in a King’s presence.

Note: You may ask how is Sage Dhaumya’s advice to the great Pandavas have anything to do with Boss Management? Well good you asked. Read on. And remember to replace the word ‘King’ with ‘Boss’. I have also included my humble opinion under 'translation'.

How should one conduct before the king? What actions are appropriate?

Who is entitled to live in the Royal households?

Who does a King like?

I thank the Gutenberg Press for the original and the English translation.

It is easy to see the relevance of the above in today’s context. If you have fallen off the favor of the boss, read the above and I am sure you will also understand what went wrong and what you need to spring back.

And to all those who are successful…add below any other technique that you have used for successful Boss Management.
